Many hotels have stand alone rates but are reluctant to lower these rates unless bundled with a flight.

Stay On A Sunday

This is a great tip to use when staying in a large city because Sunday nights are often discounted.  This is do to the fact that weekend leisure travelers have left and the business travelers have not yet arrived, causing a lot of empty rooms.  If you can, be sure to add a Sunday night stay into your vacation.

Stay At a Brand New Hotel

Often you will find the best deals at brand new hotels and resorts.  Why?  New resorts often don’t have the word of mouth buss that a more established resort has.  This can make travelers reluctant to give a new property a try. 

New properties often use a trick to entice travelers.  They will often discount their rates during their “opening” period.  You will then be able to enjoy a luxury resort at a fraction of the price.

Take Advantage of The Freebies

Hotels don’t want to lower their rates, so they throw in freebies.  This may include free nights, free room upgrades, free breakfast, kids stay free, ect.  This will all add up to discounts for you.
